Eyespot Handrail
Forged steel, cast glass by Erwin Timmers
The practical challenge with this handrail commission was to take up as little space as possible in a fairly confined area, just inside the front door of the home. The client had removed an old builders’ standard rail many years before because it was unattractive and in the way. Now, they wanted the safety and support of a functioning handrail again.
What started as a necessary concession to gravity and getting older, became an opportunity to add something extraordinary to everyday life. As the detail photo shows, the cast glass “eyespot” — created especially for this project by Erwin Timmers of the Washington Glass Studio — truly glows as late afternoon sunlight streams in through the front door.
