Hall Tree
For this project, the client presented me with the sunken entrance-vestibule to her newly renovated townhouse, with a high wall stretching up into the first floor living area. “I want something made by you here, but I don’t know what,” she said. Ultimately we settled on the design for this sculptural “Hall Tree.”
In the ground floor entranceway, the Hall Tree provides a functional mirror and coat hooks, and then extends up the wall to create a mysterious sculptural presence in the living room.
Forged steel and copper, glass mirror
Partly an extreme elaboration on an ornamented mirror from the Winterthur Museum, this piece was meant to evoke the wonder of a 19th century Natural History exhibit, or a fossil-hunter’s trophy collection. It also obliquely references Victorian furnishings constructed from steer horns or turtle carapaces.
