Forged steel and copper, glass mirror

For this project, the client presented me with the sunken entrance-vestibule to her newly renovated townhouse, with a high wall stretching up into the first floor living area. “I want something made by you here, but I don’t know what,” she said. 

We considered some chandelier designs and handrails for the stairs, but ultimately settled on this sculptural “Hall Tree.”

In the ground floor entranceway, the Hall Tree provides a functional mirror and coat hooks, and then extends up the wall to create a mysterious sculptural presence in first floor living room.

Partly an (extreme) elaboration on an ornamented mirror I had seen at the Winterthur Museum, this piece was meant to evoke the wonder of a 19th century Natural History exhibit, or a fossil-hunter’s trophy collection. It also obliquely references Victorian furnishings constructed from steer horns or turtle carapaces.
